At this point you may be thinking, “Someone would have to be a saint to do everything you have outlined in Part II!” I empathize, but you don’t need to be a saint. You don’t need to do everything right away, and you can’t do it by yourself. This book offers a comprehensive overview of many ways teachers and other school staff can support trauma-exposed students. Once you know these, you can begin to adopt them as you are able. However, to be successful you need to take special care of yourself. If you’re like me and many other educators, this is a challenge in and of itself, but I can’t overemphasize its importance. It also helps to learn mindfulness- and compassion-based practices to build your resilience. In turn, you can teach these practices to your students as a way to promote self-awareness, self-regulation, and a caring school community. In Part III, you will learn these skills and how you can effectively apply them to cultivating a trauma-sensitive classroom.
